The HBO biopic "Bessie," starring Queen Latifah as the iconic blues singer Bessie Smith, is filming in Olde Town Conyers through Thursday and Friday.

Railroad Street, Commerical Street and Center Street is closed to vehicle traffic Thursday night. Railroad Street has been transformed into a dirt road and Olde Town brought back to the early 1900s.

Scenes will also be shot on Commercial Street during Friday.

Camera Ready Liasion Gina Hartsell said audience members would still be able to access the New Depot Players show "Nunsense," which plays Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Smith was born in Chattanooga, Tenn. in 1894. Her Baptist minister father and her mother died while Smith was young. Smith began performing in the minstrel show circuit in 1912 where Ma Rainey took her under her wing. Smith signed a contract with Columbia Records in 1923 and rose to fame in the 1920s and 1930s.

Queen Latifah has previously filmed in Olde Town for "Joyful Noise" in 2011, which starred Latifah and Dolly Parton.
