James "Doc" R. Smith

Mr. James "Doc" R. Smith, 78, died May 24. The son of the late Sarah Smith, he was born in Newton County Feb. 15, 1931. He was preceded in death by his mother.

"Doc," as he was affectionately called, was brought up in a Christian home. At an early age, he joined St. Paul AME Church and became a dedicated member. He also served on the church's usher board. Most of his adult life her worked in construction. Doc married Ms. Annie Pearl Browning and was the proud father of four sons and a daughter. During his spare time, he enjoyed helping the elderly. He had a very kind and loving personality.
Survivors are wife, Annie Pearl Smith; sons, Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Maxine) Carter, Mr. Ralph Smith and Mr. Biff Smith; 10 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ms. Charlie Mae Ponder, Ms. Lizzie Ruth Smith; half-sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Baskin (Sallie) Colbert, Ms. Larcina Brown, Mr. and Mrs. John (Rosie Craig) and Mr. and Mrs. Ray (Thelma) Nolley; half-brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Henry (Glory) Starr, Mr. and Mrs. Roger (Angeia) Starr and Mr. Willie J. Starr; special and devoted friend, Ms. Lena Mae Moore; nieces, nephews and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Smith were held May 29 at Young Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Stegall officiating. Interment followed at Westside Cemetery.
