ATLANTA (AP) — State labor officials say metro Atlanta's unemployment rate has risen to 6.2 percent.

That's up from 6 percent in December.

The Georgia Department of Labor announced the new unemployment figure early Thursday.

Labor officials say the rate increased as metro Atlanta lost about 35,100 jobs, many of them temporary and part-time jobs related to the holiday season.

Elsewhere in Georgia, metro Gainesville had the lowest area jobless rate for December at 5.2 percent.

The Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest rate at 8.3 percent.

Statewide, Georgia's seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for January was 6.4 percent. That's down from 6.6 percent in December.
