ATLANTA (AP) — The Georgia Department of Transportation plans to get many of its construction crews out of the way of drivers hitting the road for Labor Day weekend.

The DOT said Monday it plans to suspend construction on Georgia interstates and other major highways starting at noon Friday. Work on paused road projects won't resume until the morning of Sept. 8.

Marc Mastronardi, the agency's state construction engineer, say Georgia transportation officials want to make road travel "easier and safer for all" during the holiday weekend.

The DOT says crews may still be working on some routes and some long-term lane closures may remain in place.
