Newton Marching Band holds fundraiser

Newton High marching band students got a chance to dunk their director Jason Smith (above) Saturday at a band fundraiser in the Newton High School parking lot.

There were the usual hijinks of students running up and pushing the dunk button when Smith wasn’t looking and one student dunking him on a rebound throw, as well as a few good old fashioned bullseyes, including one female student (right) who sent Smith swimming twice.

The $934 raised will help pay for the band’s travel expenses, including homecoming performances at Hampton University in Virginia and South Carolina State University, said band booster president Sandra Speaks.

The band needs more donations and sponsors, booster parents said. Interested parties can donate at the school on Ram Drive.
