Johnny Isakson, a Republican from Marietta, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004.

WASHINGTON — Georgia students have until next week to register for Sen. Johnny Isakson’s annual statewide U.S. Military Service Academy Day.

The event will take place on April 28 at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta in coordination with the state’s congressional delegation, but registration is required by April 23 for all attendees due to security restrictions at the base.

There is no cost to attend, and the event is open to students in grades eight through 12 and their parents.

Isakson’s Military Service Academy Day is the largest event of its kind in the country and typically draws hundreds of students and families from across Georgia. The program is designed to provide students with information about attending the nation’s five military service academies, including the application, nomination and appointment process.

“We are so glad to again welcome Georgia students and families for this unique opportunity,” Isakson said. “I urge families to register early to learn about the nomination process directly from high-ranking representatives from each academy.

“We are also pleased to have so many members of the Georgia congressional delegation working with us and participating again this year.

Along with Isakson, Reps. Karen Handel of Roswell, Hank Johnson of Lithonia, Barry Loudermilk of Cassville and Rob Woodall of Lawrenceville are expected to attend the event.

Representatives of all five academies — the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Military Academy — will delivery presentations regarding their requirements and expectations for admittance.

The Lassiter-Pope-Kell Navy Junior ROTC Armed Exhibition Drill Team will perform at the beginning of the program.

The Military Academy Information Day will be from 10 until 11:30 a.m. at Hangar 5 at the Dobbins Air Reserve Base. Due to Dobbins’ security restrictions, all people attending the event must make reservations. Photo identification will be required at the main entrance gate for admittance. Guests may arrive as early as 9 a.m. in order to avoid congestion at the entrance gate and to visit information tables.
