Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff's Office arrested and charged a Covington man Dec. 20 for DUI after he was found asleep at the wheel in the drive-through at the McDonald's on Salem Road.
According to the incident report, deputies responded to a call that a driver in the drive-through appeared to be asleep. When deputies arrived, they found the 1999 Chevy Suburban in line and Shedrick Thomas behind the wheel. They approached the driver to ask if he was OK and smelled alcohol when he answered that he was fine. During a search of the vehicle, deputies found a clear plastic cup with yellow liquid, which smelled like alcohol, in the cup holder.
Deputies asked Thomas to step out of the truck and performed sobriety tests, which he failed.
Thomas was placed under arrest and asked to submit a breath sample, which he refused. He was transported to the Newton County Detention Center, where he was again asked to submit a breath sample. He refused again.
Thomas was issued a citation for DUI and for having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.
Disorderly man unfazed by Tasers
A man arrested for disorderly conduct Christmas day proved too much even for officers' Tasers.
According to the incident report, when officers arrived on the scene, Michael Kratzer was attacking a man who was sitting in a truck in the Five O' Clock Somewhere parking lot. Kratzer was punching the car's front passenger window and screaming profanities at the truck's owner.
When officers told Kratzer to stop and move away from the truck, he began walking towards officers in an aggressive manner. Officers warned Kratzer that if he did not stop, they would be forced to use their Tasers. Kratzer did not comply and one officer used the Taser on him. Kratzer did not seem to be affected by the Taser and began snatching out the wires.
Officers were able to subdue Kratzer with physical force and he was transported to the Newton County Law Enforcement Center, where he was issued a citation for disorderly conduct.
Thieves nab truck, hot tub in Covington
Officers with the Covington Police Department are investigating a vehicle theft Dec. 24 on Golfside Drive in Covington. The truck reportedly had a hot tub and tools in the bed when stolen.
According to the incident report, the owner parked the truck in his driveway around midnight Dec. 24. When he went outside in the morning, the Ford F-350 with the hot tub in back was missing. The hot tub is valued at $5,000.
Officers searched the area, but there was no broken glass or drag marks in the driveway, although the owner said he still had both sets of keys.

CPD arrests woman for CVS shoplifting
Officers with the Covington Police Department arrested a woman Dec. 24 for shoplifting $55.93 worth of merchandise from the CVS Pharmacy on Highway 278.
According to the incident report, the witness saw Kelley Williams putting several pieces of makeup into her purse. When officers searched Williams, they found all of the reported items in her purse.
Williams was transported to the Newton County Jail and issued a citation for shoplifting.
