A Newton County Sheriff's Office deputy was arrested New Year’s Eve and charged with simple battery under the Family Violence Act.

Michael Lewis, 29, was arrested around 1:45 a.m., after deputies answered a call about fight. After speaking to several witnesses at the home Lewis was arrested and transferred to the Rockdale County Jail, where he was housed for his safety. According to Newton County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer, 1st Lt. Mark Mitchell, the investigation is ongoing.

"Sheriff [Ezell] Brown wants to assure the public that this case will be handled just like any other," said Mitchell.

Lewis, who has been with the sheriffs office for six years, is currently on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation by the Office of Professional Standards.
