COVINGTON, Ga. – Less than an hour after responding to a deadly shooting at a gas station on Highway 142, officers with the Covington Police Department (CPD) responded to a shooting on Brown Street that resulted in an unidentified 28-year-old male being flown from the scene suffering from a gunshot wound to his face.

According to a press release from CPD Public Information Officer Allan Seebaran, officers responded to the 2000 block of Brown Street shortly before 9 p.m.  Tuesday night in reference to a person shot.

When they arrived at the scene, the person who had been shot, also the suspect in a domestic violence incident was in his vehicle perpendicular to the roadway suffering from a gunshot wound to his facial area.

According to the release, the shooter, identified as Jon Winter, remained on the scene and was detained by police without incident and a .357 magnum revolver was seized as evidence.

Seebaran said based on statements received by police, the suspect went to the residence to fight with Michelle Wilkins. During the argument, Wilkins tried to get away from the suspect but he would not let her. According to the release, there was a physical altercation between the two during which the suspect pushed Wilkins into some bushes and took her cellphone.

According to the release, when Wilkins went after the suspect to get her phone back, the suspect placed her in a chokehold and dragged her to his vehicle. The suspect then reportedly got into his vehicle and began to drive away with Wilkins still in in the chokehold.

According to the release, Wilkins’ 13-year-old daughter saw what was happening and began screaming for her grandfather, stating that the suspect was trying to kill her mother. Seebaran said Jon Winters, 55, heard the screaming and exited the house with his revolver.

According to the release, Winters fired a warning shot and then fired another shot, striking the suspect between the eyes.

Seebaran said Winters was interviewed and released. He is not being charged at this time. The case was turned over to investigators.

The suspect was transported to Atlanta Medical Center by Life Flight. His name has not been released and his condition is not known.
