According to a Covington Police Department incident report, Michael Taylor, 49, of Merritt Island, Florida, and Jacob Shivers, 17, of Covington were arrested in the parking lot of the Krystal at 3230 Highway 278 afterlLicense plate recognition (LPR) technology indicated the red Kia they were riding in was stolen.

After Officer Pokey Daniels confirmed that the vehicle was stolen through GCIC (Georgia Crime Information Center), he requested back-up and got behind the Kia, following it as the driver, Taylor, made a quick turn into the Krystal parking lot.

“Once units arrived, a felony stop was made and both driver and passenger were given verbal commands to exit the vehicle slowly, walk back to the sound of my voice and face down on the ground,” Daniels reported.

According to the report, once both were in custody and placed in patrol cars, officers ran their information through GCIC for warrants and Taylor came back with a warrant out of Florida. Shivers reportedly had no warrants.

Both men were transported to the Newton County Jail charged with theft by receiving, open container and possession of drug-related objects. According to the report, there was an iron pipe used for marijuana and several beers in the floorboard along with open cans of beer.

Authorities in Florida were contacted and advised of the situation and requested that CPD hold, process and search the Kia. According to the report, the inside of the compartment was torn out along with the radio and ignition.
