It’s not that kind of rodeo. There are no bulls, horses or lassos.

But on Saturday, July 23, the Porterdale Police Department will be hosting a Bike Rodeo from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by lunch and a softball tournament at B.C. Crowell Park on North Broad Street by the Porterdale Fire Department.

Mike Besaw of Square Bikes in Covington will present the rodeo. “It’s a clinic to teach children the skills and precautions to ride a bicycle safety.”

Besaw said he had wanted to do something in Porterdale for children and adults when he was approached by Porterdale Police Chief Jason Cripps.

“We’re going to do an obstacle course and a prize giveaway,” Besaw said. “We’re going to do a mechanic’s clinic, showing kids how to adjust their tire pressure and how to adjust their brakes.”

Besaw said he wasn’t sure why it is called a bike rodeo, but “it’s been called that for years. It is organized will all kinds of different events. It’s a clinic to teach children the skills and precautions to ride a bicycle safety.”

Cripps, whose police department meets residents and their children at block parties held throughout the summer and other events, said the bike rodeo is a great way to bond with the village’s children. “[It] “also show that the police department does have a caring side and that we are simply human like everyone else,” said Chief Jason Cripps of the Porterdale Police Department, which is sponsoring the event.

Following the rodeo, lunch will be served between noon and 1 p.m., followed by a game of softball for the police and children.

“It will just be a good, down to earth game of softball,” Cripps said.

Besaw said the event caters to all ages, though it’s mostly for youth. “Bring your kids and bring a helmet,” he said.
