Ashley Simmons, a third grade student at Heard-Mixon, won first place in the state in the Drug Awareness Poster Contest for students from third to fifth grade sponsored nationally by the Elks and Elkadettes and locally by the Covington Elks and Elkadettes. She received a check for $50 from the Northeast District Elks and Georgia Elks Auxiliary. She also received a $100 check for placing first in the state of Georgia. The contest takes place annually in the fall, and her entry competed this spring with those of students around the state. Simmons is in Ms. Harris’s class at Heard-Mixon and Ms. Gilbert, councilor, administered the contest at the school. Her poster has been submitted to the national level.
