A citizen driving down U.S. Hwy 278 called 911 this morning after noticing flames coming out of the back of Double G Sports Bar & Grill. Although firefighters from the Covington Fire Department were quick to respond, roughly 60 percent of the building has been destroyed. According to one of the owner’s, Tommy Ballard, emergency personnel contacted him at around 6:30 a.m. Thursday and asked him to come to the site where he met with the other owner, Ronald Martin, so the two could assess the damage. Ballard said he was waiting to find out the exact amount of damage before they decided if rebuilding would be a possibility. The building may look fine from the front, but the majority of the back has been reduced to rubble. At this time it is unclear what started the fire, according to CFD Capt. Rob Christopher, though firefighters and arson investigators from the county and the state spent the better part of Thursday at the location. According to Christopher it was a very active fire, but since the fire department was located so close to Double G, the flames did not spread to surrounding businesses.
