A fisherman enjoying a summer afternoon at Snapping Shoals Creek stumbled upon more than just fish Friday afternoon. According to Newton County Sheriff’s Office 1st Lt. Mark Mitchell, he also stumbled upon a body.

At around 4:30 p.m. deputies responded to the area off Ga. Highway 212 and located a body that was "wrapped in some sort of material" in the creek. According to Mitchell it is unclear if the body is that of a man or woman, or how long it had been in the creek.

The NCSO is working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in an effort to positively identify the body. The body was taken to the state crime lab for analysis.

Investigators are asking the public for any information that might assist in the investigation. They are also checking both local and surrounding counties for any missing persons. The NCSO can be reached at (678) 625-1400. Tips can also be left anonymously online at www.newtonsheriff.org.
