ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Dozens of northeast Georgia residents say their mail was stolen in a mystery that involves plastic bags full of mail found in the bed of a pickup truck.

Police said Monday they were investigating the thefts of mail from 48 victims in southeastern Athens-Clarke County.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/Zl62x6) that a resident called police at the urging of his father, who found three large plastic bags of mail in the bed of his son's pickup truck. The younger man told police the bags were placed in the truck the night before by a man after a party in west Athens.

Police say much of the mail bore addresses of homes in neighborhoods off Barnett Shoals and Old Lexington roads.

Police planned to check the mail for fingerprints.
