The Newton Marine Corps Junior ROTC program is holding its annual drill camp from 8 a.m. to noon each day July 9-13 at Newton High School.

All returning drill team members are encouraged to come, as well as any upcoming freshmen who are interested in being part of this outstanding program.

During the week-long camp, new cadets will learn the basics of military drill. In addition, they will gain an introduction to ROTC organization and structure.

Returning cadets will assist in the training of new cadets to prepare them for the upcoming competitive drill season that begins late September in Asheville, N.C.

Most of the returning upper class cadets will begin preparing themselves for the 2007-08 drill season by sharpening their skills at basic drill and putting together both armed and unarmed exhibition drill routines.

Identifying new students to be part of Newton's very busy Color Guard detail will also be a focus of the camp.

The first public appearance for the new school year will be the grand opening of the new Wal-Mart on July 18, where a flag detail will raise the colors over the new store.

All students - new and old - are encouraged to come out for the camp to get a head start on the new season.
