COVINGTON, Ga. — On National Signing Day Feb. 2, Nolan McCamy officially signed his national letter of intent to join the U.S. Naval Academy to continue his football career.

As McCamy came onto the stage and sat down to put pen to paper, he had a huge smile on his face and hugged head coach Camiel Grant Jr.

“Going up [on the stage], I was confident in my decision,” McCamy said. “I knew where I wanted to go.”

The first time McCamy visited the Naval Academy was their football game against Southern Methodist University (SMU) on Oct. 14 during the 2021 football season.

Even though it was an unofficial visit and Navy hadn’t offered at that time, McCamy already knew it was the right choice for him.

“It was a beautiful place,” McCamy said. “I was like, “OK, this is where I want to go.’”

The final decision didn’t come for McCamy, though, without some help and guidance along the way.

As a matter of fact, McCamy began his signing ceremony by stating that one of Grant’s famous sayings stood at the forefront of his mind throughout the recruiting process.

“Be comfortable being uncomfortable,” McCamy recalled. “That really stuck with me, because life isn’t going to be easy, things are going to be uncomfortable but, at the end of the day, I’ve got to be comfortable being uncomfortable.”

McCamy is the reigning All-Covington News Defensive Player of the Year in addition to his appearance on the first team all-region team voted on by coaches of Region 4-AAAAAAA.

During his senior campaign, McCamy led the Rams defensively with 65 total tackles, two sacks and also collected an interception.

But, for McCamy, Newton has meant more to him than just the stats and the accolades.

“It’s a real family thing here,” McCamy said. “At Newton High School, I know I’ve got a home. It just feels great.”

Now, McCamy is off to join the Naval Academy beginning in the fall.

Though he’s excited to experience what’s next at the collegiate level, McCamy recognized it’s going to be difficult to leave Newton High School behind.

But, as he departs from Covington, he hopes people remember him for simple reasons.

“I want to be remembered as a good guy,” McCamy said. “And as someone who’ll look at you and say, ‘Nolan was a part of the community. He’s a community guy who I can go to no matter what.’”
