Facing a rival for the third straight game, Newton dominated once again, with the girls winning 54-52 and the boys winning 70-51.

The girls

The clock was running with less than 30 seconds left with the game tied at 52. Imani Broadnax, ball in hand just above half-court, got the call from Lady Rams’ head coach Tiffani Johnson to go for the win via isolation for Broadnax.

As the clock got closer to double zeros, Broadnax drove to her right and went for the step back jumper. No good. There was still time on the clock and Alexcia Chatman came up with the rebound and the putback to seal the win at the buzzer as Newton students rushed the court.

The Lady Tigers put up a valiant effort after leading for most of the fourth quarter but Chatman and Broadnax proved to be too much. Tierra Hodges led the Lady Tigers with 20, matched by Chatman.

The boys

Still undefeated. Newton’s boys were all about business tonight and it showed on the court.

Barely halfway through the first quarter and D.J. Hill had already knocked down three shots from beyond the arc. Newton beat Alcovy simply by beating them on the offensive boards. The Tigers put up a fight early and managed to keep the game relatively close.

After the first quarter despite Hill’s efforts, Newton only led by four. That lead extended to nine at halftime. With 5:31 to go the Rams led 51-41, but Newton started to pour it on after that. The Rams quickly went on a 9-3 run and never looked back.
