Newton tames Lady Mustangs

It was another easy win for Region 2-AAAAAA top’s seed Monday night, as the Lady Rams proved again why they are the top dog in the region.

Newton defeated the Morrow Lady Mustangs 71-33 in impressive fashion, keeping their undefeated record in region play alive after downing Morrow for the second time this year.

Cynteria Langhorne led Newton in scoring with 15 points in the win, while Precious Price pitched in with eight points in the game. It was a well-rounded scoring night for Newton, as they had six players who scored at least six points.

Newton’s suffocating defense forced 27 Morrow turnovers, while the Lady Rams offense found its rhythm, scoring 70-plus points for the second time this season.

“(It was) another good region win,” Newton coach Tiffani Johnson said. “We came out ready to play and maintained our intensity throughout the game.”

The game was over early for Morrow, as Newton scored six quick points in the first minute of game. The Lady Rams added to their early offensive spurt, sprinting out to a 17-0 run to start the game.

Langhorne scored 10 points during the stretch and helped her team finish off the first quarter leading 21-2.

It would be much of the same in the second quarter for Newton, but Morrow was finally able to get something on the offensive end.  The Lady Mustangs posted their highest scoring quarter of the game with 12 points during the second period; however, they gave up 21 points to Newton, during the quarter, trailing by 29 at halftime.

Newton’s bench played much of the second half and they were still able to add the lead.

Newton put up 28 points in the second half overall, while still limiting Morrow to 19 points in the final two quarters.
