Green lifts Eagles past St. Pius X

Cole Green didn’t just refuse to strike out, he didn’t just get a run-of-the-mill hit and he didn’t just drive in two runs Tuesday.

Eastside’s Green delivered his baseball team to the Georgia Class AAAA final four with a swing of the bat in the top of the seventh inning for a 10-8 win against St. Pius X.

The Eagles had the bases loaded when Green stepped up to the plate. The St. Piux pitcher then threw two pitches outside the zone for balls and brought Green within one strike of ending the game, and the Eagles’ season.

But Green swung and connected, and the Eagles will now face Buford in the state semifinals Monday.

Eastside, who also got four RBI from Conner Hewell, who was one of the runners on base for Green’s hit, won its second elimination game of the state playoffs.

The Eagles, the No. 3 seed out of Region 4-AAAA, opened the state tournament win a series win against Cairo. The Eagles lost the first game of the series to the Syrup Makers, before winning two straight to move on against Madison County.

The Eagles needed just two games to eliminate Madison County, but had a bit more difficult time against St. Pius X.

The Eagles won the first game in the state quarterfinals, 5-4 Monday, before St. Pius X forced Tuesday’s game with a 4-1 victory.

Eastside will face Buford Monday in a best-of-three series. Buford is the No. 1 seed out of Region 8-AAAA, and have yet to lose a game in the state playoffs. The Wolves defeated Whitewater, Bainbridge and Cartersville to reach the final four.
