Eastside blasts Sandy Creek 16-0

Eastside softball team extended its early season winning streak to 3-0 by shutting out the Sandy Creek Patriots 16-0 Thursday in four innings.

The Lady Eagles were paced at the plate by Erin Steele who went going 4-for-4 with a two stolen bases and Amanda Hawkins who went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Hawkins also had four RBI.

Emily Almand drove in three on two hits and Megan Hallock, Savannah Upshaw, Lexi Henson and Katie Fletcher who each notched a hit.

Senior Taylor Causey pitched a gem of a game in her first start of the year. She gave up no hits over four innings while striking out 10 of 16 batters.

The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead after a 6-run second inning and never looked back. They tacked on three runs in the third then exploded for seven in the fourth.

Eastside opened its season Tuesday with a 15-3 region win over Eagles Landing. The Lady Eagles amassed 16 hits, three by freshman Kerstin Hilley, who also drove in a game-high six runs. Steele, Causey, Upshaw and Reese Rogers each had two hits. Almand had a hit and drove in three.

Eastside scored four runs in the first, five in the second and two in the third to take a 11-2 lead into the fourth. The Lady Eagles added a four spot in the fifth.

Sophomore Katie Fletcher had a very good outing on the mound, allowing only five hits over five innings while striking out five and walking none.

The Lady Eagles wasted no time in picking up their second win of the week after they dispatched Rutland 7-1 at Warner Robins in the start of the Brawl-in-the-Fall Tournament.

Rogers and Causey split the pitching duties. Hilley again had another multi-hit game while Steele, Hawkins, Upshaw, Jade Welch sophomore Hallock each had a hit. Hawkins also looked strong behind the plate while cutting down two runners attempting to steal.

In just his first season as head coach, Jabari Bennett has brought a region championship back to EastsideOn Friday, the Eagles’ boys soccer team took down North Oconee 1-0 for the program’s first region title since the 2001 season.It was truly an emotional moment for Bennett and the Eagles’ faithful after the final seconds ticked off the clock. Following a celebration that featured a gatorade bath and the raising of Eastside’s new ‘Region 8-AAAA Champion’ banner, Bennett shared how special the moment was for him and the team.
