Butts big games come short for Belhaven

Jordan Butts, Alcovy - Butts tallied 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting but it wasn't enough as Belhaven was edged by Auburn-Montgomery 67-66 on Saturday.

Nineteen of Butts' points came in the second half, in which Belhaven was outscored 40-33 by an Auburn-Montgomery team which out-rebounded the Blazers 22-10 in the final 20 minutes.

Butts had 16 points in 39 minutes during Belhaven's 65-59 loss to the University of Mobile Thursday.

Stephen Croone, Newton - Croone scored 12 points as four of Furman's five starters reached double figures in a 69-61 win over UNC Greensboro Sunday.

Trailing 40-34, Croone hit a 3-pointer and a jump shot to spark the Paladins' 13-6 run, which put them ahead for good, midway through the second half.

The Newton graduate struggled with four points in 21 minutes in Furman's 73-59 loss at Elon Thursday.

Kate Palo, Alcovy - Palo had two rebounds and a block in five minutes of action in Georgia College and State' 58-48 loss to North Georgia Thursday.

Alex Ordu, Newton -Ordu led Oxford College with 18 points in a 56-47 home win over Georgia Northwestern Technical College Saturday.

Emili Russ, Newton - Starter Russ had six rebounds, two steals and four points but Lander fell to Young Harris 75-62 on Monday.

Shane Henry, Newton - Henry leads the GCAA in rebounding, and lived up to that reputation with 10 boards in Georgia Perimeter's 48-43 loss to No. 23 East Georgia Saturday.

Derrick Henry, Newton - Henry finished with nine points and had a chance to put Winthrop in the lead late, but the Eagles lost 63-59 at Campbell Saturday.

With Winthrop trailing 60-59 with under a minute to play, Henry's 3-point attempt with 25 seconds remaining didn't fall, forcing Winthrop to foul and Campbell to add to its lead at the free-throw line.

Jamon Hawkins, Newton - Hawkins had seven points, seven rebounds and four steals in Georgia Southwestern's 79-57 loss to Armstrong Atlantic Monday.

Playing all but three minutes of Georgia Southwestern's 70-53 loss to Flagler College on Saturday, Hawkins scored a team-high 17 points. He also had nine rebounds and two steals for the Hurricanes.

Worrel Clahar, Alcovy - In DePaul's third straight Big East loss, the Blue Demons lost to St. John's 71-62 on Saturday. Clahar scored two points in 10 minutes of action, going 1 for 8 from the field in the defeat.

Swimming
Drew Ellwanger, Eastside - Gardner-Webb won 10 events over the course of its two-day swim meet with Charleston Friday and Saturday but it wasn't enough to win in a 176-171 result. Ellwanger won two individual events, taking first place in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:05:92 and first in the 200 meter breaststroke in a time of 2:27:91. The Gardner-Webb senior also teamed with Brandon Searle, Colin James and Cole Hickey to win the 200 medley relay in Saturday's first event and win the 400 meter medley relay with Jordan Denmark, Searle and Nathan Lile.
