The Alcovy Tigers and Newton Rams begin their quest for state softball titles today in the opening round of the Georgia High School Association Softball AAAAAA state tournament.
The Tigers host the first round today beginning at 4:30 p.m. against North Cobb.
With the Tigers' 4-3 victory over Luella in the Region 2 championship game, Alcovy earned the region's No. 1 overall seed.
North Cobb finished as Region 4's No. 4 seed.
North Cobb finished the regular season with a 5-2 overall region record, winning four consecutive league games after dropping its region opener against South Cobb.
The Warriors averaged nine runs a game in region play, with their biggest win of the season coming in an 8-1 victory over Hillgrove in the Warriors' second game of the season. The loss to North Cobb was Hillgrove's only defeat of the season.
Alcovy earned the No. 1 seed in Region 2 with a perfect mark during the regular season in region action and a 3-0 mark in region tournament play.
The Tigers defeated Rockdale, Newton and Luella during their tournament run, outscoring their three opponents 17-4. Other teams in the Tiger's 4-team pod include Newnan and Colquitt County.
Alcovy will play the Warriors in a doubleheader today, with games slated for 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Rams face Hillgrove
The Rams will also face a Region 4 opponent in their state tournament opener, traveling to Hillgrove to take on the Hawks.
The Hawks earned the No. 2 seed in Region 4 with a 6-1 overall region record during the regular season.
The Hawks rolled off 13 straight wins after dropping their first game of the season to Alexander.
Hillgrove reached the championship finals in Region 4 against league champion Kennesaw Mountain. The Hawks lost the their first tournament game to Kennesaw Mountain before rallying back to beat the Mustangs 3-2 in the second game of the 3-game series. Kennesaw Mountain won the region tournament 6-4 in the final game of the series.
Newton finished third in the league after falling to Luella in the tournament's championship elimination game. The loss gave Luella home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
Game action will begin at 4:30 p.m. at Hillgrove, with the second game beginning at 6:30 p.m.
