After shocking Starr's Mill with a 47-31 win last week, Alcovy has little time to bask in the afterglow. The Tigers are back at it tomorrow for a Thursday night special at Sharp Stadium. What's more, it's the subregion opener when they take on Union Grove at 7:30.

Both teams come in at 1-2, but Alcovy has the momentum off their big win. The Tigers took it to Starr's Mill from the opening kickoff and never let up in handing the defending class AAAA runner-ups an embarrassing loss. Meanwhile Union Grove lost to Whitewater 13-10.

The numbers so far paint a peculiar picture. Alcovy leads Region 3A-AAAA in scoring at 27 points per game. That's 17 more than undefeated Griffin and nine more than any other team. The flip side to that is, they give up 34 points per game. That's second most in the subregion. But the Tigers aren't alone. All but Griffin give up more points than they score. That includes Union Grove. The Wolverines score 14 points per game while giving up 22.

Cornell White had his best game as Alcovy's starting quarterback. After missing the opener White had a less than spectacular debut against Harris County before exploding for 268 yards and four touchdowns last week. His main target, Kenard Murry, also had a career game last week. Murry caught five passes for 170 yards and two scores while also nabbing a pick on defense.

Alcovy could put itself in great position with a win tomorrow. Early on it looks like the subregion is wide open. The Tigers will be vying for one of three spots to make it to the region playoff in game 10. Union Grove is solid but beatable, especially at Sharp Stadium. Alcovy plays its next three games at home. 

If there's one area the Tigers need to shore up its on the defensive line. The team that controls the line of scrimmage often wins. Alcovy was able to cause some turnovers last week and needs that type of play against Union Grove. Tre Sorrells also needs to get  healthy and going in the running game. He hasn't had the type of start to the season he had hoped for. Devon Edwards has been spectacular in the return game and at the other two positions he plays so the running game hasn't been totally stagnant. But Sorrells is due to breakout for a big game.

With Alcovy's newfound passing prowess, the Tigers become an all-around offensive threat. White's play can also alleviate pressure on the running game.

The defense will likely be the difference. When will the Tigers hold an opponent under 20 points? You get the feeling when they start doing that they could be pretty good.
