As the regular season winds down today, Alcovy fell to Rockdale for the second time in 2012-13 on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs defeated the Tigers at Alcovy 77-47 behind a big performance from C.J. Wilson. The Rockdale senior scored 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, tallying eight rebounds and four assists.

The Bulldogs (14-9, 7-3 Region 2-AAAAAA) also got 11 points from LaRonta Parks, who was 3 of 8 from 3-point range, and 11 points from Conner Ferrell.

It was the third straight win for Rockdale, which moved it into a tie for first place in the region standings at the most important time of the season — the end.

Rockdale has two games left, with contests at home against Morrow today and at Lovejoy Saturday. Saturday’s game will be the biggest one of the regular season, pitting the league’s two top teams with the region’s No. 1 seed at stake.

Lovejoy is neck-and-neck with Lovejoy, which has a 7-4 mark and only one regular season game remaining, against Rockdale. The Wildcats beat Rockdale in the two teams’ previous meeting, 74-59 in Rockdale on Jan. 22. Whichever team wins Saturday will get a bye in the first round of the region tournament beginning Wednesday and an automatic bid to the state playoffs, while the other gets the No. 2 seed and will need to win one game to get into state.

That team will be Alcovy’s opponent of the opening round in Luella as the Tigers (7-16, 2-9) locked up the eighth and final seed in 2-AAAAAA.

With just two region wins all year, Alcovy is four games behind Druid Hills, which is 4-7 in league play with a game at Newton remaining tonight. Tuesday’s loss was the Tigers’ fifth straight Region 2-AAAAAA defeat.

Druid Hills will draw the third seed in the region tournament, which could be Newton.

Newton defeated Druid Hills 45-43 in overtime on the road, snapping a four-game losing streak on Jan. 15. The Rams (16-8, 6-5) are currently in a three-way tie for third with Morrow and Luella, all with 6-5 region records. Luella hosts Alcovy today and Morrow travels to Rockdale. Morrow picked up its most recent loss against Newton, after having to forfeit one of its final three games due to overscheduling.

The Mustangs defeated then first-placed Luella 57-55 on Friday before Newton was due to come to town.
