Host Tigers lead in Newton Cup

Alcovy hosted the first Newton Cup track meet Wednesday and Thursday, and after one day of track events, the host team was on top.

The Alcovy boys' track team had 50 points after Wednesday, which featured just running events. The field events finished after press time Thursday. Before Thursday, Newton was in second with 38 points and Eastside was third with 24.
J'Kari Claixte grabbed two first-place finishes for the Tigers, both in hurdles. Claixte won the 100-meter hurdles with 15:55 and the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.73.

Damontae Ivey won in the 800-meter race for Alcovy in a time of 2.04:60. The Tigers had the top two finishers in the 200-mter dash in Robert Harvey with a time of 22.56 and Khorvon Nelson in 22.63.

Alcovy took home two more first place finishes in the 4x100 with a time of 42.74 and the 4x400 in a time of 3:30.52.

After the first day of events Eastside was ahead of the girls' rankings with 48 points. Newton followed with 34 and Alcovy with 24.

The Lady Eagles finished two races in first and second place starting with the 400-meter run. Dallas Worthy won with a time of 58.15 and Dormecia Gilber was second in 59.86. Deanna Gayle won the 800-meter run in 2:35.91 and Rhodelle Lewis was second in 2:37.46. Brianna Thornton took first in the 1,600-meter run in 6:46:53 and Tamara Warren was first in the 300-meter run in 49:56 for Eastside.

The Lady Eagles were also the top 4x100 relay team in a time of 49.52.
