Alcovy, Newton and Eastside will all be running from each other today.

The first edition of the Newton Cup will be held at the Alcovy track today and Thursday starting at 6 p.m. today.
"We're trying to start something new," Alcovy coach Melvin Parker said. "We're trying to get a county meet going."

Parker has been at Alcovy for three years and has been trying to get a county meet going so that all three schools could compete with each other for the first time.

Eastside, Newton and Alcovy all compete in different regions and rarely are on the same track at the same time during non-region invitationals.

"I think it will be a very competitive meet, being that we never get to compete as much in invitationals and stuff against the other schools in the county," Parker said. "I think it will be a great meet, and I'm looking forward to it."

The Newton Cup will start with the track races today, including the 4x800, 4x100, 100, 200, 110-hurdles, 800, 200, 300-hurdles, 3,200 and 4x400.

Starting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the three schools will compete in the shot put, discus, long jump, triple jump, pole vault and high jump.

"They are excited," said Parker of his team. "The reason being Newton is not in our region and Eastside is not in our region as well.

"They are excited about racing the other teams."
