Alcovy Tigers coach Chris Edgar got to put a nice, neat bow on the 2016 football season during Monday’s year-end football award banquet, where he doled out team awards to 11 different Alcovy athletes.

Senior Koby Perry was the big winner, as the only player to take home two awards — Best All-Around Skill Player and Defensive MVP. Perry has received 15 football scholarship offers in the last two months, and was lauded by his coach as one of the key cogs to Alcovy’s back-from-the-shadows kind of season.

After two combined seasons of 1-19 football, Edgar led his bunch to a 4-6 campaign this past fall, as the Tigers were just a couple of wins and breaks away from clinching a playoff spot.

In addition to the expected awards for varsity players, Edgar said his football booster club made sure to make it possible for non-varsity players to receive proper recognition also.

“Our booster club really stepped up here, and for the first time in program history, we were able to give individual awards for all three levels of our program: ninth grade, junior varsity and varsity,” Edgar said. “It was really nice because the other classes of guys often just go in and sit there for the whole time and wait for a certificate, and that’s it.

“But we were glad to have created some built in excitement for them.”

Beyond that excitement, Edgar said he was also amped up to see so many projected 2017 leaders getting recognized in 2016.

Junior quarterback Quendralin Hammonds won the offensive MVP award after starring for the Tigers at both quarterback and running back. He, along with freshman running back Adrian Robinson — winner of the Rookie Award —  are players Edgar says makes him want to start thinking about the 2017 season as soon as possible.

“He’s gonna have a big year next year,” Edgar said. “He’s a kid that’s got a 3.9 GPA and runs a 4.5 (seconds) 40 (yard dash). Those are pretty good numbers.”

Edgar also expressed pride in Jesse Patterson and Jerome Williams who both won the Tiger P.A.C.E. Award.

“It’s the equivalent of a coach’s award for us,” Edgar said. Tiger Pace is our catch phrase, and the word pace stands for Pride, Attitude, Character and Effort. The guy who wins that award shows those four components all the time, and for us this year, both of those guys did it.”
