Alcovy football coach Chris Edgar hopes he has addressed a huge need for his team with the recent hiring of offensive line coach Damoio’n Wright.

As a Putnam County High Alum, Wright was looking to create a successful playing career in football. However, that goal took a twist when he became Greene County’s defensive line coach for a year before Edgar sought after him to join the Tigers’ staff, and aid Alcovy in improving what is considered the biggest current weakness on the Tigers offense.

“It’s really touching for me to leave,” Wright said to the Lake Oconee News. “I really didn’t want to leave, but I saw something bigger and somebody offered me something better.”

 Wright is not only leaving behind the defensive line coaching duties at Greene County High School, but he also helped the girls track team secure a region title, and assisted the boys team to a second place finish in their region. On top of all of this, he also managed to generate a successful boys JV basketball team that ended its season with a 17-1 record.

Although Wright noted that he enjoyed holding several coaching positions at Greene County, he stated that the hectic schedule burned him out, so for the time being, he will only be sticking with football at Alcovy.

The Tigers return a large chunk of speed and skill players, and are hoping to pair that skill with more aggressive play in the trenches. Alcovy finished its 2016 campaign with a 4-6 mark, just missing the postseason in Edgar’s first year at the helm of the program.
