UPDATE: Identity of man killed in I-20 wrong-way crash in Newton confirmed

COVINGTON - 52-year-old Joel William Simpson, a Newton County resident, has been confirmed dead after he drove his vehicle against traffic on I-20 Tuesday night, crashing into another vehicle around the 89 mile mark between Almon and Salem roads.

Simpson reportedly made a U-turn on the highway and began driving West on I-20 East. Two others are in critical condition following the crash.

The investigation into the incident continues.

(May 27, 5 p.m.) One person is confirmed dead and another injured after a vehicle travelling westbound on Interstate 20 eastbound crashed into another vehicle Tuesday night around the 89 mile mark between Almon and Salem roads.

The driver responsible, who reportedly made a U-turn on the highway and began driving against traffic, was killed, while two others are in critical condition.

The incident is under investigation by the Newton County Sheriff's office, which has not yet released the name of the deceased.
