Deputy killed in the line of duty identified (May 8, 2010)
On Saturday, June 7, the community is invited to participate in the second annual Brian Mahaffey Memorial Benefit Ride, remembering the local deputy and hero who was killed in the line of duty in May 2010. The ride will raise funds supporting the families of fallen officers, including the family of a recently slain Griffin officer.
Mahaffey, a Rockdale County Sheriff's Office investigator, husband and father of two young children, was killed while attempting to serve a warrant on May 8, 2010, the day after his 28th birthday.
"My brother gave his life doing what he loved: protecting this community," Chris Mahaffey, Brian's brother, said previously. "Please come out and join us in remembering and honoring his name."
This year, the ride will raise funds for the family of slain Griffin police officer Kevin Jordan, who was shot and killed while making an arrest outside a Waffle House in Griffin early in the morning last Saturday, May 31.
Ride organizer Jeny Green said "The ride honors fallen Rockdale County sheriff's deputy Brian Mahaffey, and the benefitting organization is COPS, which stands for Concerns Of Police Survivors, specifically the Georgia chapter. I know the funds raised for the ride will specifically go to benefit the family of fallen Griffin police officer Kevin Jordan, who leaves behind his wife and seven children."
Vehicles will start the ride at the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office, 911 Chambers Drive in Conyers, and end at Los Charros Mexican Restaurant on Hwy 20 at Honey Creek Road. Registration begins at 10 a.m., with the ride beginning at 11:30. The entry fee is $10 per vehicle, with all varieties of trucks, motorcycles, and cars welcome.
At Los Charros, a silent auction and raffle of gift baskets, gift cards, and other items donated by local businesses will be held, also benefiting COPS and the family of Kevin Jordan.

The funeral for Kevin Jordan will be held June 9, 2:30 p.m., at Oak Hill Baptist Church, 100 Lakeside Dr., Williamson, Ga. The burial at Westview Gardens in Griffin. Visitation for the officer will be held Sunday, June 8, 4 to 8 p.m. at the church.
