The Hospital Authority of Rockdale County approved grants of $5,000 each for six local non-profits at Tuesday night's called meeting, in addition to grants for two non-profits approved June 28.

The following non-profits approved Tuesday were:

Kimberley Chance Atkins Foundation
Project ReNeWal
Rockdale Task Force Against Family Violence
Rockdale Coalition for Children and Families
Refuge Pregnancy Center
Prevent Child Abuse Rockdale
(PCAR)

The one non-profit denied funding on Tuesday was Elks Aidmore, Inc.

"Even though the program is a good program, it just didn't meet the criteria," said Hospital Authority Board Chairperson Ethel Boyle. One of the goals of the grant program is to aid organizations that serve Rockdale residents.

Elks Aidmore spokesperson Dawn Butler later responded that agencies that serve foster children do not choose which children to serve and are assigned children by the state. She also pointed out the foster children attend Rockdale schools and are counted as Rockdale residents when they age out. "When these children come into care, Elks Aidmore and other agencies that service this population are honored to have the opportunity to nurture these children and help them become healthy productive citizens," she wrote.

Boyle pointed out two of the organizations approved tonight addressed teenage pregnancy, which was one of the "glaring" needs identified in the community health study commissioned by the Hospital Authority board.

On June 28, the Hospital Authority Board also approved a $3,350 grant for Rockdale Cares and a $5,000 grant for A Special Boutique.

The Hospital Authority received 15 grant applications with a total of $279,000 in requests for this application cycle, which closed out May 31. Twelve of those applications were for Small Community Project Grants ($5,000 or less) totaling $59,200. Three were for the larger Primary Care Access/Clinic Grant Applications, totaling $220,000.

The Coalition for Children and Families, the Kimberley Chance Atkins Foundation, and Project ReNeWal are new grantees.

In other Hospital Authority business:

The Hospital Authority office will move from the North entrance to a larger office in the East Tower next week, in order to make room for renovated check-in space in the north entrance.

The board also discussed receiving an independent computer server to host the Hospital Authority's website.

The next Hospital Authority Board meeting is on July 26, 5:30 p.m., in the private dining room in the north entrance cafeteria.
