Dear Editor: "Most prominently, we have a president who talks incessantly about class, particularly the middle class." This is what Jon Kyl, R-Arizona, said about President Obama recently. House Republicans could give 98 percent of Americans a tax cut right now, but instead they're holding the middle-class tax cut hostage unless they can give an extra cut to the to 2 percent.
Austin Scott, our Congressman from Georgia is standing in firm opposition to the middle class tax cuts as well. They say its not fair to give 98 percent of us tax cuts. For a party who has consistently told us that things aren't always fair to come out and proclaim that taxes are the only thing that should be fair is laughable.
This country from the 1930s to the 1980s had a top marginal tax rate of more than 70 percent. We built the Hoover Dam, an interstate system, our biggest national monuments, we
expanded our waterways, grew our middle class, started the rural electrification program, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and we put a man on the moon.
It's common sense to extend the tax breaks for the middle class right now, instead of making ordinary Americans pay to give the rich a break. When the middle class has money, the economy expands. We buy the products that drive demand. When demand is up, productivity rises. When productivity rises, we hire more people to meet the supply needs of the economy.
Taxes are at a 30-year low. There is no reason why this should be an issue. All that we are asking is for 2 percent of Americans to go back to the 39 percent tax rate they paid during the 90s. I know lately, the wealthy haven't been very loyal Americans. Hiding their wealth to avoid paying taxes, and sending our jobs to other countries. Here is a chance for them to show some fortitude and do what's right.
Tell Austin Scott that enough is enough. Demand that tax cuts for the middle class are maintained. Demand that the one-trillion dollar hand out to the wealthy ends. If not, his job will be someone else's. I'll make sure of it.
