Ruth Hewell Shaffer, 93, of Morganton, North Carolina passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016. She was born in Newton County, Georgia on Oct. 13, 1922 and was the daughter of the late Dabney Decalb Hewell and Fannie Belle Morrow Hewell. Ruth was an active member of the Senior Citizens Club in Morganton. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and the Eastern Star in Georgia. Ruth was a devoted mother and grandmother. She loved traveling, sewing, and spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her dogs. Ruth was a member of First Baptist Church in Morganton.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Earl Thomas Shaffer Sr.; son Earl Thomas Shaffer Jr.; son-in-lawJunior Lee Johnson; and two brothers and four sisters.
She is survived by daughters Ruth Louise Johnson Wideman and spouse Alton of Lufkin, Texas; Linda Shaffer Satey of Morganton; son-in-law Phil Satey of Edgewater, Florida; daughter-in-law Muriel Shaffer Murphy of Tarpon Spring, Florida; grandchildren Sandy Anderson and spouse Pete, Jason West and spouse Moira, Lee Johnson and spouse Wendy, Trey Shaffer and spouse Larry Dias, Lisa Edwards and spouse Chris; Nick Satey and spouse J. Leigh; 15 great-grandchildren; and sister, Francis Polson of St. Petersburg, Florida.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m., Sunday, August 28, 2016 in the Parlor of First Baptist Church. A memorial service will follow in the church chapel at 2 p.m. with Dr. Thomas A. Bland, Jr. officiating.
