Our beloved Dorothy Ellen Mcknight Blackshear was born July 29, 1935 in Porterdale, Georgia to the late Mr. & Mrs. Carlton (Bessie Kate Brewer) McKnight, Sr. She was one of nine children and was preceded in death by four brothers (Arbie, Carlton, Jr., Charlie and Arthur Mcknight) and two sisters (Gennie Munford and Pearlie Adams).

Growing up in Newton County, Dorothy attended Rose Hill Elementary and Washington Street Schools. She proudly wore No. 4 as one of the star players on the WSH Wolverines Basketball Team. Dorothy completed BATTEY State Hospital School of Nursing and received her certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1959. Because of her compassionate heart for helping others, Dorothy enjoyed her 50 year nursing career. She worked diligently at Newton County Hospital and at various nursing homes.

Dorothy was married to Mr. Hollis Blackshear who preceded her in death. This union was blessed with three daughters, Jacqueline, Phyllis and Cynthia.

While living in Georgia, Dorothy was a devoted and faithful member of Richards Chapel United Methodist Church; she served as one of the leaders of the Youth Usher Board.

Dorothy was an avid sports enthusiast who loved watching tennis and basketball. Her beloved team was the LA Lakers. An excellent cook, she was known for her wonderful chocolate cakes.

Our beloved Dorothy departed this earthly life on January 10, 2015, leaving a legacy of love her three daughters: Jacqueline Mattison (Larry) , Phyllis Webb and Cynthia Blackshear-Warren (Reginald); six grandsons: Landy and Ryan Mattison, John F. and Damon Webb, Chris and Chaz Woods; four great-grandchildren: Lauren Webb, Sean Mattison, Trace Woods and Nevaeh Webb; two sisters: Camille Mcknight and Nadia Mcknight; and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and special friends.
