Claude Phillips, of Covington, died June 3, 2009, at Abbey Hospice, at the age of 84. He was the son of the late Claude Phillips and Elsie Foster Helms. An Army veteran, Mr. Phillips was stationed in the Pacific during World War II, and served in Okinawa, Guam, Iwo Jima, and the Philippines. He retired from General Motors Lakewood Plant in 1982 after 27 years of service and for the last few years, he had attended East Newton Baptist Church. Mr. Phillips was an avid gardener and also enjoyed fishing and hunting. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Phillips of Covington; daughter and son-in-law, Claudine and Jim Mayes of Loganville; son and daughter-in-law, Phil and Joanne Phillips of Rutledge; grandchildren, Cristye Moon, Blaine Phillips, Greg Phillips, Brandon Phillips; six great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Ethelene Davis and Vernell Grant both of Griffin, Glenda Jean and Winfred Grant of Brooks, GA; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Phillips will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2:00 PM, at the chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, with Rev. Tom Lee officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday. June 5, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM.
