The Anointed Body of Christ Church in Porterdale suffered hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage Thursday night, when a fire blazed through the building.

The Newton County Fire Service was called to the scene, 34 Hemlock Street, at approximately 10:50 p.m., finding a large church facility with heavy smoke and flames showing, according to Chief Kevin O’Brien.

Fire crews “initiated an aggressive offensive interior attack,” O’Brien said.

“Fire had already vented through the roof causing a large hole approximately 6 feet wide by 10-15 feet long,” he said.

The fire had already burned through the floor and into the sanctuary, where fire crews were able to contain it.

According to O’Brien damage was estimated at approximately $275,000 from the building and contents alone. The building suffered extensive smoke, water and structural damage to the second floor and heavy smoke and water damage to the sanctuary and portions of the first floor.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
