Man flees police with gun near school

A man running from a police chase didn’t make it far before tossing a gun near Middle Ridge Elementary School on Friday, May 16.

Newton County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to pull over a vehicle being driven by Bobby Rhodes, of Covington, due to window tint being too dark. According to NCSO Investigator Jeff Alexander, the vehicle did not stop and “continued at a high rate of speed until it got to Middle Ridge Elementary.

According to reports, Rhodes then abandoned the vehicle and a foot chase ensued. Alexander said a deputy’s Taser was deployed on Rhodes during the chase. After a pistol magazine was seen on Rhodes, another deputy arriving on the scene discovered a handgun near the area where Rhodes had fallen.

Rhodes was arrested for fleeing/attempting to elude a police fficer, firearm possession by convicted felon, firearm possession during a crime, window tint violation, passing in a no passing zone, reckless conduct, reckless driving, weapon in a school safety zone, failure to maintain a lane, obstruction of officers and resisting arrest.
