Loaded gun found at Challenge Charter Academy
Authorities still investigating

Working on an anonymous tip, authorities located a loaded semi-automatic weapon at Challenge Charter Academy Monday afternoon.

According to Newton County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Lt. Tyrone Oliver, an anonymous call came in around 12 p.m. Monday. The caller said that someone had brought a gun to the school.After arriving at the school, authorities spoke with several people and were able to locate the loaded .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun inside an unattended book bag. A couple days later three juveniles – two 16-year-olds and one 14-year-old – were charged in connection with the incident. There are also charges pending against and adult in the case. Two of the juvenile suspects were charged with having weapons on school grounds, possession of a firearm by person under 18 and carrying a concealed weapon. The third was charged with possession of a firearm by a person under 18. Further charges could be pending. Authorities have said that the students did not threaten anyone with the gun.
