Georgia Perimeter College's Newton campus will not lose any teachers in the first round of personnel cuts announced last week, according to an open records request received Thursday, but the campus will lose 24 of its 266 employees totaling around $500,000 in salaries.
The majority of the cuts at the Newton campus were to public safety and administration, including seven security guards and three tutoring officials as well as employees in admissions, counseling, finance, grounds, maintenance and records. The cuts came as part GPC's efforts to reduce a $25 million budget deficit caused by significant overspending by former President Anthony Tricoli.
According to the Open Georgia website, which lists salaries of public officials, the 24 cuts are expected to trim $482,666 from the budget; however, two of the workers were not listed on the website. The lowest paid worker (excluding one security guard) who was cut made more than $9,000, so the total amount of salary cut was likely more than $500,000. The totals do not include benefit packages.
Newton lost 9 percent of its total employees, which was right on par with GPC as a whole as the college lost 282 of its 3,110 employees. The college had said its total personnel cuts were expected to trim $10.7 million from the budget.
Originally, GPC officials said the Newton campus was going to lose 26 employees, and it was not immediately clear why only 24 positions were listed in the open records request.
The Newton campus enrolled 2,724 students in the fall of 2011, according to the college's website.
