MONROE, Ga. - According to a news release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, a 26-year-old man is dead after allegedly shooting a family member in front of police in Monroe Tuesday.

Around 11 a.m., the Walton County Sheriff's Office was sent to 3775 Lovers Lane in Monroe on a 911 call reporting a disturbance by a family member with a gun, according to the release. Chavius Hollis was also reportedly exhibiting erratic behavior.

"When deputies arrived, a family member and multiple deputies entered the home," according to the release. "The family member was present in an attempt to calm Hollis down."

Hollis raised his gun and shot the family member. One deputy then fired shots, striking Hollis. He died at the scene. A GBI medical examiner will conduct the autopsy on Hollis.

The family member sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and is being treated for his injuries. He is expected to recover.

No officers were injured in the incident.

"The GBI will continue its independent investigation," according to the release. "Once complete, it will be turned over to the Walton County District Attorney's Office for review."
