NEWTON COUNTY – A two-vehicle crash on I-20 in the early morning hours of Monday, Feb. 24, resulted in the death of one person and the critical injury of another.
Georgia State Patrol Post 46 Assistant Commander Sgt. Christoph Ayers was dispatched to a two-vehicle fatality crash in Newton County on I-20 WB at about 3:42 a.m. Ayers said with SCRTE assistance, the initial investigation revealed that a passenger car traveling at a high rate of speed with no headlights on rear-ended a semi truck in the right travel lane near mile marker 100. This is in Newton County near the Walton County line.
“Both vehicles left the roadway and came to final rest in the median. The unrestrained passenger of the passenger car was killed on impact. The driver of the passenger car was transported by Airlife to Grady Hospital where he remains in critical condition at this time,” Ayers said. “At the time of this report neither the driver or passenger of the car have been identified.”
Ayers said the at-fault driver (of the passenger car) will be charged with felony vehicular homicide first degree, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, along with other traffic related offenses.
