Southern Heartland Arts, Inc. (SHA) hosted its annual scholarship presentation Wednesday, May 24.  

Cirsten Boyd and Haley Brown of Eastside High School and Josey Elder, a sophomore at the Newton Campus of Georgia State University received scholarships for books and expenses. The Eastside graduates were recommended by their Art Instructor Leslie Wellborn.  Newton County Superintendant of Schools Samantha Fuhrey, an artist and supporter of the visual arts, was in attendance, along with members of Southern Heartland Art Guild and friends and families of the recipients.

Cirsten Boyd will be attending Grand Canyon University, a Christian college in Phoenix, Arizona, majoring in Marketing and Graphic Design.  Hayley Brown will be attending the Newton Campus of Georgia State University, and will also major in Graphic Design.  Josey Elder attends the Newton campus of Georgia State with plans to major in Art Therapy.  Josie has been a long time art student of Gallery Director and Instructor, Elise Hammond.

Southern Heartland Arts, Inc. (SHA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization advocating for the visual arts since 1988.  Scholarships are awarded from the James P. Hayes Cardinal Scholarship Fund, a fund seeded by Lisa Hayes in memory of her late husband and supported by art guild dues and donations from members of the Newton community.  The fund also has ten partial scholarships available for eligible children to attend summer art camps, which begin in June.  We encourage those who would need financial assistance to send their child to art camp to contact SHA Board Chair and Art Camp Director Jackie Kelly at skel621@aol.com.
