PORTERDALE, Ga. - On Oct. 19, streets of one of Georgia’s best-preserved mill communities will alive with the sounds of cackling laughter and costumed runners and walkers enjoying the sixth annual Witches Night Out.
The day begins with a vendor’s market starting at noon in the historic Porter Memorial Gymnasium with the 5k beginning at 5 p.m. lead by the head witch, who MC’s the event.
The mix of historic buildings, mill cottages, trails, the Yellow River Park and back lanes make Porterdale an ideal location for a fun run.
Event organizer, Rebekah Larsen - with her dedicated team of volunteers - has made a tradition of creating staged photo ops throughout the run route.
To add to the photo ops, the Porterdale Business Alliance and the Porterdale Arts Collective are busy at work creating themed scarecrows and staging.
Porterdale residents are also being encouraged to get into the spirit of the event by decorating their yards.
With the Yellow River Jam scheduled for Oct. 26, Main Street Porterdale is making a series of scarecrows representing the last five years of the event. The scarecrows, made from recycled materials, will be wearing one of the custom T-shirts created for each year of the Jam.
In support of the Witches Night Out, Main Street Porterdale will be donating the freshly minted 2019 tees as door prizes for the event.
Tickets for the Yellow River Jam will be on sale at the night out.
The Witches Night Out is a chance for families, work, school or neighborhood groups to have some fun by forming a team, dressing up and participating in the fundraiser.
The downtown alley will become a family play area using super-sized yard games including connect four, jenga, checkers, cornhole along with ping pong and sidewalk chalk.
Interim City Manager and Public Works Director Robert Witcher, as always, is geared up for the event.“I have put together a group of volunteers, who are going to be fun run ready to assist in guiding runners through the route, the City of Porterdale is looking forward to getting into the spirit of the event," he said.
