PORTERDALE, Ga. - Come out and enjoy a day with your family at the Great Porterdale Yellow River Park Rock Hunt April 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hosted by Newton County Ga. Rocks and the Village of Porterdale, it will be a day of family fun with a rock hunt, scavenger hunt, Tinkergartern fun, kite flying, giant yard games and the ever popular big bubble fun.

Brooke Helf created the Newton County Ga. Rocks in 2017, after she was told about similar groups around the country, and wanted to bring this experience to Newton County.  The group's focus is on bringing beauty to the county (and wherever the rocks travel to). The rocks serve as encouragement to for people get out and explore the area and be more active. There are variations on the local group all over the country--some rock groups are only for "kindness rocks" - rocks with a message of kindness to pass along, others are more artsy. Newton County GA Rocks is a hybrid of all of those.

With over 3,500 members on the Newton County Ga. Rocks Facebook Page, the rockers and the rocks have become quite the phenomenon. Rockers leave the decorated rocks in parks, trails, inside and outside businesses, in downtown districts throughout the county with some even hide Newton County in other states. The rocks can be true works of art or more simple in execution. The “finders” are encouraged to post their finds on Facebook and Instagram.

Brooke has enlisted an energetic and artistic team of volunteers to paint rocks for the event and it is guaranteed that no one will go home empty handed. Families are encouraged to bring bikes, scooters, kites and a picnic lunch to enjoy at the event. The park’s commons is a perfect place for kite flying and the disc golf course will be open for play. The Porterdale Yellow River Park is one of the county’s most unique parks, the event is a perfect opportunity for families to explore this wonderful spot.
