COVINGTON, Ga. - The Georgia Wildlife Federation is eager to start its 25th year of working with hunters to provide meat to the tables of those in need through the Georgia Hunters for the Hungry program.
The program provides opportunities during hunting season for hunters to share their harvest with those in need. GWF has been a sponsor of the program since its start in 1993 by promoting and raising funds to pay processors for venison delivered to food banks.
“The program has been expanded this year with the addition of six new processors allowing more opportunity to participate,” Sam Stowe, sportsman’s programs manager for GWF, said.
In the 2017-18 season, more than 15,000 pounds of venison was donated to Georgia food banks to feed approximately 61,000 high-quality and protein-rich means to Georgians.
“Since the program’s inception more than a million meals have been provided to needy Georgians. The program for the upcoming season will surpass last by another 6,000 pounds,” Stowe said.
Hunters interested in participating the in the GHFTH program locally can bring field-dressed deer to two local drop-off locations between Oct. 20 and Jan. 13.
