Although the Eastside varsity volleyball squad has gotten off to a rocky start this year, the Lady Eagles have won two consecutive matches.

During its opening matches on August 14, the Lady Eagles (3-3) lost to Athens Christian and North Oconee by the scores of 25-15, 25-10 and 25-17, 25-11, respectively.

However, there were several bright spots, such as the play from Eastside sophomore Antonia Mullins, who recorded two aces, four blocks, one kill and eight tips.

Eastside seniors Qeiarra Johnson and Alysha Vanderzwart combined for two aces, two digs, one block, two kills and one tip. In addition, Eastside sophomore Ashley Aycox had two blocks and two tips.

Eastside head coach Angie Lewis said that although her team made a lot of errors, she was hoping that the first-match jitters were out of the way.

For the most part, Lewis was correct.

Despite falling to Ola on Thursday at home (25-23, 25-15), the Lady Eagles recovered to defeat rival Newton by the scores of 25-20 and 25-16.

Against the Lady Rams, Eastside highlights included 10 straight points by Vanderzwart, including six aces in the match. Johnson added five consecutive service points, including two aces.

And the Lady Eagles followed the victory with another one Saturday against Eagles Landing, winning both matches.

Eastside will travel to Cedar Shoals on Tuesday for its next match on the court.
