Alcovy didn't get off to the start of 2012-13 season it would hope after losing its first three and four of its first five games.

But Saturday, the Tigers picked up their biggest win of the young season.

Alcovy hosted Class AAAAAA pre-season ranked No. 4 Westlake and came away the victors in a 64-62 win.

It was just the second loss of the season for Westlake, and its first against a Georgia team. The Lions only other loss was 57-48 against Ridgeway, Tenn. on Dec. 8.

Derrius Mathis led the Tigers with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Mathis grabbed six of his rebounds on the offensive glass, helping to continue Alcovy's possessions to push past the Lions.

The Tigers shot just 33 percent from the field (21 of 63) but grabbed 12 of its 29 rebounds on the offensive end.

Shane Lawrence added 12 points and Justin Wallace had four assists.

It was Alcovy's second win of the season, the other coming from Druid Hills, 69-63 on Dec. 4.

Mathis is leading the Tigers with 11.8 points per game, and Marcus Beasley is tallying 10 points per contest.

Mathis is also grabbing seven rebounds a contest and has 16 steals on the season.

Westlake opened the season with seven straight wins before playing Ridgeway.

The Lions lost to Class AAAAA runner-up Savannah in the sweet 16 last season.

Alcovy, which reached the elite eight of the Class AAAAA playoffs in 2011-12, travels to Charleston S.C. for the West Ashley Holiday Classic Thursday through Saturday.
