COVINGTON, Ga. — Eastside Lady Eagles senior goalkeeper Emily Manfredi signed a letter of intent to continue her soccer career at Georgia Military College Wednesday afternoon during a signing ceremony at Eastside, one day after the Lady Eagles’ season ended in the Sweet 16 round of the Class AAAA state soccer tournament against Spalding. 

Manfredi recorded a save in that game. She was part of an Eastside squad that qualified for state for the first time since 2012. 

Peachtree Academy girls advance to championship game

In its first year of existence, the Peachtree Academy girls soccer team punched its ticket to Saturday’s Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association’s state championship game by defeating Cherokee Christian 1-0 in penalty kicks this past week. 

The Panthers played stout defense behind center fullback Samantha Van Ness. The lady Panthers won in penalty kicks scored by Anna Yount, Nadia Janousek and Vanessa Barbosa. Maddie Hearn earned a shutout in goal and had the game winning save on a the final penalty kick.

Coach Ken Van Ness expressed much pride in his team and how it played all year despite being the program’s first, and full of young talent.  “I  looking forward to coaching this team for many years to come,” Van Ness said.

Piedmont Academy and YACS baseball nets region crowns

After defeating Tiftarea Academy 11-4 back on April 27, finishing up a 12-6-1 season with an 8-2 record in Region AA, the Piedmont Academy Cougars captured the Region 4-AA championship in Georgia Independent Schools Association play, meanwhile Young Americans Christian School also won its region, before moving on to sweep Georgia Christian in a two-game GICAA Round One playoff series 4-1 and 11-5. 

Piedmont went on to knock off Notre Dame Academy in a two-game sweep, winning game one 15-0 and game two 16-0 Friday. The Cougars will host Crisp Academy Friday in Monticello with game one beginning at 1 p.m. and game two slated to start 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. An if-needed game will take place Saturday at noon in the event of a split. 

Piedmont Academy is looking for its fifth straight GISA state championship.
