COVINGTON, Ga. — The Newton County Hoop Shoot was sponsored by the Covington Elks and Elkadettes here in Covington. There were four Newton County Elementary Schools that participated.

The age groups were eight and nine-year-olds, 10 and 11-year-olds as well as 12 and 13-year-old boys and girls. The contest was held at the Wolverine Gym on Geiger Street in early January. 

First place winner in the girl's division for 8 and 9 year-olds was Audrey Varfolormeyer making 14-of-25 shots. Secondnd place was Staci Castle who shot 12-of-25 and third place was Kylie Black. The 10 and 11-year-old girl's winner was Lyric Jones. The second place winner was Ayanna Collier and Hope Henry was the third place winner.

The boy’s winner for 8 and 9-year-old was Cedric James, Jr. from Porterdale Elementary School and he shot 20-of-25. The second place boy winner was Iserian Byrd-Cottle from Oak Hill. The third place winner was Brian Bosak from Mansfield. The boy's winner in the 10 and 11-year-old group was Carter Dave from Oak Hill School shooting 16-of-25 shots. Christian David placed second from Porterdale, and third place went to Jessie Standard from Mansfield Elementary School.

This is the 50th year of the National Elks Hoop Shoot anniversary.

The winners of this event will participate in the Northeast District Elks Hoop Shoot held in February.
